I have been using heatmap theme since 2009 and have to found a better theme for wordpress that allows me to put ads of all types where ever I want them, No other them allows that. Yes you can get pluggins for it but whhy add more weight to a theme whene you can get it built right into it. There are over 20 different child themes or styles you can use to suit your needs plus niche layouts as well.

It is only getting better all the time an support is the best I have seen for a theme on the net.

We use PLP here and works like a charm. Uses are endless for this pluggin by CaseProof.
You can allow your users to make links for themselves if you waht to.

I have tried a few and they put a heck of a load on your server, so it would probably be better to get a outside chat for your site. Its the adding all new post (accesses data base) adding all users (accesses data base) and the list goes on. The accessing data base is what causes the load and a chat causes a ton of it.

is there a way to make a forum private while the whole site is open to general public

You can set a forum to a group and assign user to it that you want there no one else will be able to access it.

Cartpauj PM plugin is related to the forum or it’s a separate private messaging functionality

Its separate puggin that the entire site can use
